Consultants at Tripp Umbach recommend the creation of a UGA partnership with the Medical College of Georgia in light of the growing doctor shortage.

2008

Georgia General Assembly invests $2.8M to expand medical school capacity in the state.

2009

The Board of Regents approves the AU/UGA Medical Partnership.

2010

First 40 medical students matriculate.

2012

Medical Partnership and College of Public Health move to the UGA Health Sciences Campus on Prince Avenue.

2014

The first class of 40 medical students matched to residency programs and graduate.

2018

Athens Free Clinic opens, 2,800 patients have been evaluated to date.

2019

Georgia General Assembly appropriates funds needed to increase class size from 40 to 60 students per class. The subsequent renovation at Russell Hall creates simulation rooms, a clinical skills lab, and a virtual anatomy lab.

2020 - 2021

Medical Partnership joins the fight against COVID, providing tests and, eventually, vaccinations, including a program to vaccinate 1,400 students, faculty, and staff from the Clarke County School District.

2021

Enrollment caps out to 60 students per class.

2022

A school-based clinic opens at Clarke Middle School. The Clarke Middle Health Center provides free care to all CCSD students, their families, and their teachers.

2023

Tripp Umbach feasibility study concludes that UGA can support an independent medical school.

January 2024

Gov. Brian Kemp recommends $50 million in the amended budget to support the creation of a medical school at the University of Georgia.

February 2024

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia votes unanimously to authorize the University of Georgia to establish a new independent School of Medicine in Athens.

March 2024

The Georgia General Assembly approves the amended budget, including $50 million for the design and construction of a medical school building at UGA, to be matched with institutional funds.

March 2024

Dr. Shelley Nuss is appointed founding dean of the UGA School of Medicine.
