Mary Bond, MD, FACP
Director of Clinical Skills & Professor of Medical Education in Internal Medicine
Originally from North Carolina, Dr. Bond received her undergraduate degree in history from Duke University in 1990 and completed medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994, then residency training in internal medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1997.
She moved to Georgia in 1997 and practiced general internal medicine in Peachtree City, Georgia, followed by Emory University Student Health in Atlanta, before moving to Athens in 2003 to pursue private practice in internal medicine. She has been teaching with the AU/UGA Medical Partnership since its inception in 2010, the Piedmont Athens Regional Internal Medicine Residency Program from 2016 to 2024, and the St. Mary’s Internal Medicine Residency Program from 2024 to present. She taught for eight years as the Site Clerkship Director for Internal Medicine at the Medical Partnership and has taught in clinical skills since 2010. Dr. Bond currently serves as the Director of Clinical Skills and teaches in Community and Population Health, where she has the privilege of working with patients at The Potter’s House with year 1 or 2 students. Teaching has become a passion of hers, and she finds it immensely gratifying to see learners of all levels develop into compassionate, knowledgeable physicians.
Hobbies outside of medicine:
She loves music and loves learning to play new instruments, as well as photography, particularly landscapes, and traveling to get the “perfect shot.” She likes working with her hands and, at one point, wanted to be a surgeon. She sews, does woodwork, painting, and building, and likes the challenge of repairing things.
One piece of advice she wishes she had gotten as a resident:
Choose what you love and go after it with your whole heart; and prioritize your happiness along the way.
