Student Insurance Requirement

The University of Georgia (UGA) requires that all students whose programs require health insurance (including the SOM) have coverage. Coverage is effective August 1 to December 31 (fall semester) and January 1 to July 31 (spring semester). Students must either enroll in the Mandatory Student Health Insurance Plan (Hard Waiver Plan) with the University System of Georgia Board of Regents student health program or opt out if they have other acceptable health insurance coverage.

Students at the SOM are provided with group long-term disability insurance and needlestick insurance coverage.

Student Needlestick Insurance Information

All students enrolled full-time in the UGA School of Medicine are provided with needlestick insurance coverage. This coverage is provided by Wellfleet Insurance. Digital ID cards can be accessed 24/7 by creating an account with Wellfleet or by downloading the Wellfleet Student mobile app to their smartphone or device. Should a needlestick/sharps injury occur, students should use this insurance to cover the initial evaluation costs.

Student Immunizations

University System of Georgia (USG) and University of Georgia (UGA) immunization policies require all students to provide documentation of mandatory vaccinations. Failure to do so will result in a hold on their account and restrict registration until the requirements are met. Religious and medical exemptions may be requested per the UGA UHC Immunization Policy.

Immunization and Screening Policy

Exposure to Infectious and/or Environmental Hazards

Medical students routinely encounter infectious and environmental hazards during clinical training—from bloodborne pathogen exposures through needlesticks, to occupational injuries and environmental illness. The purpose of this policy is to protect student health and safety by establishing preventive requirements (immunizations, N95 fit testing, and bloodborne pathogen training), and providing a clear, time-sensitive response protocol for exposures.

Behavioral Assessment and Response Council (BARC)

BARC serves to promote the safety and effectiveness of University students and the University community, primarily through the coordination and analysis of information regarding students who may pose a threat to any member(s) of the University community (including a risk of self-harm) or to others. When BARC determines threatening behavior is present, it may make use of intervention and support tools designed to mitigate threatening behavior and promote the safety of the University community.
