Career advising encompasses much more than helping students choose their clinical specialty. The paracurricular program offered by the Office of Student Affairs is built to help our students critically consider clinical specialties in the context of their personal mission.

Specialty Advising

Every medical student will discover exciting fields of medicine they had not experienced before as they rotate through their clerkships and electives. Most students will consider more than one specialty before finally choosing their specialty for residency. The Office of Student Affairs is ready to accompany you along that journey.

Core Specialty Advisors

The UGA SOM core specialty advisors are here to help you match successfully. Each specialty will have designated advisors who are informed with the latest intel on the residency match to provide guidance to students considering the specialty. Every student will have a “go-to” advisor for their residency application to offer guidance for choosing senior electives and away rotations, writing personal statements, interview skills, residency application list preparation, and signaling.

UGA Mentor Program

Want to learn more about different specialties from the practicing physicians themselves? Want to hear the perspectives of a physician working in a specific geographic area? The UGA Mentor Program pairs students with mentors from the UGA Alumni and community network. Click here to learn more.

Personal Mission

Will your professional career be defined by clinical excellence? Do you have aspirations of pursuing research at an academic institution?  Will you heed a calling for service or advocacy? Do you imagine yourself teaching future generations of physicians as an educator? Perhaps the entrepreneur in you wants to develop hospital systems as an administrator. The Office of Student Affairs will take a holistic approach to help you create your path to realizing your personal mission.
