On Thursday, July 23, the Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce (GBHCW) held its quarterly meeting at the University of Georgia School of Medicine.
The mission of the GBHCW is to identify and address healthcare workforce needs with an emphasis on underserved communities. This goal is achieved by recognizing and addressing the healthcare workforce needs of Georgia communities through the promotion and development of medical education programs.
Data from the GBHCW has also played a critical role in the School of Medicine. The GBHCW publishes in-depth reports that identify which counties in Georgia are medically underserved. This data has assisted the School of Medicine in identifying the unique needs of every county in the state and the locations where healthcare barriers are most prevalent.
Dr. Shelley Nuss, dean of the School of Medicine, serves as chair of the Medical Education Advisory Committee, which advises the GBHCW on various issues related to Georgia’s medical education system. Nuss opened the program by welcoming the board members to campus, and attendees ended the day with a tour of the School of Medicine’s medical education and research facility.
