Karpen named assistant dean for assessment and evaluation

Sam Karpen, PhD, has been named the assistant dean for assessment and evaluation for the University of Georgia School of Medicine, effective Sept. 1.

Karpen earned his Bachelor of Science in psychology from St. Francis University in 2007 before receiving his PhD in social psychology from Indiana University in 2013.

The new position at the School of Medicine marks a return to Athens for Karpen – he served as director of assessment at the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine from 2018-2021 after holding the same title at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy for three years. Since departing UGA in 2021, Karpen served as a senior research scientist at Western Governors University.

In his new role, Karpen will be responsible for the strategic oversight and management of assessment and evaluation processes within the School of Medicine with a focus on ensuring the effectiveness and continuous improvement of the curriculum, student learning, faculty performance, and program outcomes.

“We are very excited to welcome Dr. Karpen to the School of Medicine,” said Dean Shelley Nuss. “His extensive experience with program assessment and strategic planning is a critical necessity required to ensure that the School of Medicine will be an innovative and distinguished institution for years to come.”
