Advancement Criteria

To advance to the next academic year, students must meet all the requirements as stipulated in the Promotion and Graduation Policy. In general, a student must pass all courses or clerkships and satisfy all longitudinal requirements established for a particular academic year. To graduate, a student must complete all four years of the MD program satisfactorily and satisfy all graduation requirements stipulated in the Promotion and Graduation Policy.

Committees: The APPT and SPC

Students who experience academic or professionalism difficulties will be reviewed by the Academic and Professionalism Progress Team (APPT). The goal of the review is to determine whether students require additional support or monitoring to progress successfully through the MD curriculum. Students who have a deficiency as stipulated in the Remediation and Consideration for Suspension or Dismissal Policy will be referred to the Student Progress Committee (SPC). Students who are reviewed by the SPC will meet with the SPC to discuss their performance and receive an official decision on remediation and academic status. For failure of courses or must-pass components in the pre-clerkship, the SPC will consider remediation plans presented by relevant curriculum leadership. For failure in third- or fourth-year clerkships or rotations, remediation will generally require repeating the clerkship or rotation. Failure of shelf exams will generally require repeating the shelf exam. Students with multiple deficiencies may be considered by the SPC for suspension, repeat of the year, or dismissal. The role of the APPT and SPC, as well as potential decisions made by the SPC, is described in the APPT and SPC graphic and in relevant policies linked below.

Time to Complete the MD Degree
Students must complete the MD degree and satisfy all graduation requirements within six years from matriculation. This does not include time spent on dual or joint degrees, such as the PhD component of a joint MD-PhD program.
