The University of Georgia School of Medicine has been granted candidate status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the accrediting body for U.S. medical education programs leading to the doctor of medicine degree.

Candidate status is an important step in the accreditation process and indicates that the School of Medicine has demonstrated progress toward meeting LCME accreditation standards. The school completed an LCME site visit in September 2025 and is currently awaiting a decision on preliminary accreditation. Upon receiving preliminary accreditation, the School of Medicine may begin recruiting its inaugural class of students.

The School of Medicine will undergo additional accreditation steps with the LCME in the coming years to reach full accreditation.

The LCME is jointly sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association. Graduation from an LCME-accredited medical school is required for eligibility for the United States Medical Licensing Examination and entry into residency training programs.
